Electrical and Thermal Transport in Carbon N anotubes

چکیده
Owing to their atomic-level perfection, carbon nanotubes exhibit unusually high electrical and thermal conductivity. Our electrical transport calculations, performed using a scattering technique based on the Landauer-Biittiker formalism, suggest that the conductance of inhomogeneous multi-wall nanotubes may show an unusual fractional quantization behavior, in agreement with recent experimental data. Our calculations also indicate that due to the combination of a large phonon mean free path, speed of sound and specific heat, the thermal conductivity of an isolated (10,10) carbon nanotube exceeds that of any known material, reaching the value A~6, 600 W /m·K at room temperature.

Role of Interatomic Potentials in Simulation of Thermal Transport in Carbon Nanotubes
Interatomic potentials, which describe interactions between elements of nanosystems, are crucial in theoretical study of their physical properties. We focus on two well known empirical potentials, i.e. Tersoff's and Brenner's potentials, and compare their performance in calculation of thermal transport in carbon nanotubes. In this way, we study the temperature and diameter dependence of thermal...
متن کاملBallistic phonon thermal transport in multiwalled carbon nanotubes.
We report electrical transport experiments, using the phenomenon of electrical breakdown to perform thermometry, that probe the thermal properties of individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Our results show that nanotubes can readily conduct heat by ballistic phonon propagation. We determine the thermal conductance quantum, the ultimate limit to thermal conductance for a single phonon channel,...
متن کاملOn the lack of thermal percolation in carbon nanotube composites
Recent experiments demonstrated very low percolation thresholds for carbon nanotube composites signified by steep increases in electrical conductivity at very low nanotube loadings. By contrast, thermal transport measurements, even on the same samples, showed no signature of the percolation threshold. These contrasting behaviors are particularly intriguing considering that both transport proces...

The purpose of this study is to use the thermal and electrical conductivities of copper oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes for the preparation of high-performance nanofluids for achieving better heat transfer properties. These nanofluids consist of a water/Ethylene Glycol solution containing single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs). The effects of such...

We show that the thermal and electrical properties of single wall carbon nanotube ~CNT!-polymer composites are significantly enhanced by magnetic alignment during processing. The electrical transport properties of the composites are mainly governed by the hopping conduction with localization lengths comparable to bundle diameters. The bundling of nanotubes during the composite processing is an ...
